On 23 September 2026, the European Week of Sport, #BeActive, begins. To mark the occasion, the City of Reykjavík will host an opening celebration at Café Flóra in the Reykjavík Botanic Garden at 5:15 PM.
Willum Þór Þórsson, President of the National Olympic and Sports Association of Iceland (ÍSÍ), will welcome guests and officially open BeActive Week.
Jakob Frímann Þorsteinsson, an expert in outdoor recreation, and Sólrún Harðardóttir, an educational materials author, will give a presentation entitled:
“You’re Allowed to Pick Worms for Mum”
The title refers to the Icelandic children’s song The Song About What Is Forbidden. The speakers will briefly discuss the things that are prohibited or may create barriers, but the main focus will be on the many opportunities to enjoy a wide range of outdoor activities in Reykjavík’s natural surroundings.
The website natturareykjavikur.is will be highlighted as a valuable resource. Spending time outdoors in nature plays an important role in personal development and in nurturing people’s abilities and interests.
The Dalheimar after-school programme will offer adventures and games for children.
Soup will be served.
Physical activity, outdoor recreation and togetherness 🧡💛🧡
